Weight Loss Surgery requires a life long commitment to nutritional and fitness guidelines that must be strictly adhered for long term success. The surgeons at RMAP Have found that patients who are the most successful have a comprehensive education and rehabilitation program in place that assists them in making the lifestyle changes needed to reach and maintain optimum health.
All patients who have surgery through Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians must be willing to invest and personally commit themselves to the educational lifestyle program.
Patients receive written materials and instruction on a variety of topics. These topics include: recommendations for preparing meals, nutritional needs, new lifestyles and habits to nurture, exercise suggestions and general information to make the transition easier.
Perhaps the most significant change following surgery is the loss of hunger. Your surgeon will prescribe a dietary program to help you achieve your weight loss goal while maintaining good health. Taking a multi-vitamin and calcium on a daily basis helps to prevent nutritional deficiencies. Meals will consist of approximately 70% protein and 30% vegetables but could vary depending on the type of surgery you receive. Adjustments for Lap Band patients are as important as diet and exercise. You will receive more specific guidelines from your surgeon.
Choosing beverages wisely and forming new sipping habits are important. 64 ounces of liquids needs to be consumed on a daily basis for proper hydration. Water is the ideal choice of liquid. Drinking of any beverages during or within 30 minutes before or after, a meal is restricted. Doing so can wash foods through too quickly leaving an unsatisfied feeling or may cause nausea. High calorie beverages should be avoided. We strongly recommend that carbonated beverages be avoided as they offer no nutritional advantages and present significant potential disadvantages. Successful weight loss and long-term maintenance is directly dependent upon the kinds of foods and beverages consumed.
Maintaining your goal weight becomes a lifelong achievable habit following the guidelines of your new lifestyle. Returning to old habits can sabotage your investment causing weight gain. Self discipline is a must for long term success following any of the weight loss surgery procedures. The vast majority of patients are able to achieve this success.
