Surgery Qualifications

Only you and a qualified physician, upon conducting an in-depth consultation and examination for your specific condition, can determine if weight loss surgery is appropriate.

The following criteria are commonly applied to determine who is eligible for Weight Loss Surgery; however they are not universal standards. Your insurance company will make the final determination of your eligibility under its own criteria:

  • A person with a Body Mass Index greater than 40 meets the criteria established by the National Institute of Health.
  • A person with a Body Mass Index of 35 or greater with the presence of medical conditions, also known as co-morbidities, which are likely to benefit from weight reduction such as:
    • Diabetes
    • Hypertension
    • Arthritis
    • Sleep Apnea
    • Congestive Heart Failure
    • Other obesity-related disorders.
  • A person who is unable to maintain weight loss through other documented methods.
  • The patient who understands that the surgical procedure is only part of the total treatment program for obesity
  • Agreement to accept the outcome of surgery.
  • Willingness to sign an informed consent for surgery.
  • Willingness to cooperate fully with Rocky Mountain Associated Physician's Fitness & Nutritional Guidelines and long-term follow-up.
  • Willingness to invest in physician directed patient education program.
  • Mandatory participation in Support Groups or web based support.
    • Participation in the educational program encourages long term success implementing a lifestyle of health to keep weight off long term.
Exclusions
  • Individuals who are drug or alcohol dependent.
    • Exception will be made if the individuals is in a good treatment program with one year of sobriety and this success is documented by attending physician, psychiatrist or treatment counselor.
  • Individuals unwilling to change lifestyle long term.
